James Talarico, the Texas Democrat U.S. Senate nominee, has praised New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani as a ‘template’ for Democrats across the country, urging his party to ‘adopt’ Mamdani’s successful approach in winning elections.

Learning from Mamdani’s Victory

During an August 5, 2025, interview on the Higher Learning podcast, Talarico highlighted Mamdani’s electoral success in New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary, which occurred roughly six weeks earlier. Mamdani’s platform included bold progressive policies such as free public transportation, a rent freeze, city-operated grocery stores, a $30 minimum wage, and higher taxes on the upper class. During an appearance on Meet the Press, Mamdani remarked, ‘I don’t think that we should have billionaires.’

Building a Broad Coalition

Talarico has consistently emphasized the importance of building a broad coalition, including democratic socialists and reaching voters on the far left. In an interview with NewsNation’s The Hill on July 29, 2025, he stated that Democrats needed a ‘giant tent’ that would ‘include some Democrat Socialists.’ He also spoke of reaching ‘people on the far left’ and described the objective as ‘winning power.’

Health Care and Progressive Policies

Talarico has promoted a health care proposal he calls ‘Medicare for Y’all,’ which includes coverage for illegal immigrants. The name bears resemblance to Sen. Bernie Sanders’s ‘Medicare for All’ proposal. One of Talarico’s earliest ads mimicked Mamdani’s, and Fortune later proclaimed, ‘Texas has its own Zohran Mamdani.’

Political Philosophy and Social Justice

Talarico has also expressed support for progressive political philosophies, describing capitalism as one of three interconnected ‘oppressive systems’ during a 2020 Sierra Club climate forum. He credited young activists for drawing the link between climate change, white supremacy, and capitalism, stating that only by ending these systems together could they ‘begin the process of dismantling them.’

Religious and Political Views

In a 2021 appearance on the Activist Theology podcast, Talarico commented on Jesus, stating that ‘the most popular figure in our country, particularly on the conservative right, is this socialist anarchist from Palestine.’ This statement reflects his broader alignment with progressive and socialist ideals.
