A former elementary school teacher who gave birth to a child fathered by her underage ex-student has pleaded guilty to sexual misconduct charges, according to Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland. Laura Caron, 36, of Cape May Court House, New Jersey, admitted to second-degree endangering the welfare of a child with sexual conduct, which could result in up to five years in prison.

Relationship and Allegations

Caron first met the 11-year-old boy in 2016 when she taught him and his brother fifth grade at Middle Township Elementary School. Prosecutors allege that the teacher had inappropriate sexual relations with the student, who was 11 years old at the time, and continued the relationship until he was 15. The boy was 13 when Caron gave birth to a daughter in 2019.

The relationship remained secret for years until December 2024, when the boy’s father noticed a resemblance between Caron’s child and himself and his son in a Facebook photo. This led to an investigation that uncovered more details, including claims that the victim’s brother once witnessed Caron sexually assaulting his sleeping sibling. The boy’s sister also recalled falling asleep beside her brother and waking up to find him in Caron’s bed.

Victim’s Defense

The victim, now believed to be 21, has defended Caron and claims he initiated the relationship. He told the Daily Mail, “They need to drop all charges. I wasn’t groomed or raped or manipulated by her. She never initiated anything. I started everything. If it was up to me she wouldn’t have been in jail.”

Caron, a former basketball player at Pennsylvania’s Cabrini University, was charged on January 15, 2025, with aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, and endangering the welfare of a child. Sutherland emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “Teachers hold a position of great trust, and the allegations in this case represent a deeply troubling breach of that trust.”

Broader Implications

Caron must also surrender her teaching license and all future public employment, and she is expected to be sentenced in January 2025. This case adds another layer to what researchers describe as an epidemic of educator sexual misconduct in the past two decades. Social science investigators point to a “culture of permissiveness” in school districts that allows or overlooks inappropriate relationships between teachers and students, including fraternization after school hours.

The internet and smartphones have also contributed to the trend, enabling secret communication through social media and text messages. In September, Breitbart News reported that the Trump administration’s Department of Education announced a crackdown on school districts that enable such misconduct by failing to discipline teachers or transferring them to other schools—a practice known as “passing the trash.”

“This epidemic of nationwide sexual abuse in our schools must end,” said ED Secretary Linda MacMahon in a letter to school districts across the U.S.
