Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) recently showcased his resilience and unyielding determination in a candid, unscripted conversation with TMZ reporter Jacob Wasserman, revealing a side of the conservative leader rarely seen in the media. The exchange, captured in a newly released video, highlights Abbott’s sharp wit, deep faith, and the grit that has defined his career since a life-altering accident in 1984.

A Life-Changing Accident

During a visit to the historic Texas Governor’s Mansion in Austin, Abbott recounted the July 1984 incident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. At 26, he was jogging in Houston when a massive oak tree fell on his back, crushing his vertebrae, breaking his ribs, and damaging vital organs. Surgeons had to permanently fuse two steel rods into his spine to stabilize his condition.

Despite the severity of the injury, Abbott framed the accident as a test he refused to fail. “It shows that even an accident like that does not slow you down,” he said. “It was after that I went on to become governor of the great state of Texas.”

Resilience and Forward Motion

When asked how he managed to lead an ambitious career while living with the consequences of the accident, Abbott emphasized the importance of mental fortitude and hard work. “It’s an enormous mental challenge… you’re stuck in a quagmire for a while, but you deal with it understanding that either you stay stuck or you move forward,” he explained. “I chose to move forward. Every step of the way, I met with success.”

Abbott also described his physical routine, maintaining an intense upper-body workout regimen rooted in his athletic background. This discipline has allowed him to govern effectively while managing daily life in a wheelchair. His refusal to quit has marked every stage of his public life, from passing the bar exam to serving as a trial judge, sitting on the Texas Supreme Court, and ultimately becoming governor.

A Candid Conversation

The conversation took a lighthearted turn when Abbott offered Wasserman a “brewski”—a Texas icon, Shiner Bock. Wasserman, who normally sticks to a strict gluten-free diet, hesitated but eventually drank it after Abbott’s good-natured persistence. “History was made,” the governor quipped, drawing laughs from the gathered participants.

Abbott’s supporters have long pointed to his ability to meet adversity with both personal warmth and relentless forward motion. In a media environment often quick to reduce conservatives to caricatures, the TMZ visit offered a straightforward look at the man who runs the nation’s second-largest state while living with the consequences of a single afternoon in 1984—and who treats the whole story as proof that setbacks do not have the final word.
