Hollywood A-list actor Chris Pratt has joined Pope Leo XIV in a new Vatican documentary that delves into the history, religious significance, and archaeological discoveries surrounding the tomb of St. Peter. Titled Pétros ení: Alla scoperta delle origini, the film premiered at the Rome Film Festival and marks the 400th anniversary of the consecration of St. Peter’s Basilica on November 18, 1626.

Documentary Explores St. Peter’s Legacy

Produced by AF Films in collaboration with Vatican Media and the Fabric of St. Peter, the documentary is directed by Paula Ortiz and written by Andrea Tornielli. Narrated by Chris Pratt, the film features an appearance by Pope Leo XIV, who is currently receiving treatment at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital. The documentary explores how Peter’s burial place became a center of devotion for early Christians and the foundation for the first great basilica built under Emperor Constantine.

Historical Significance and Cultural Impact

The title Pétros ení is derived from a Greek inscription meaning “Peter is here,” found near the apostle’s burial grounds. The film guides viewers on a journey beneath the basilica to uncover the history and archaeology of one of Christianity’s most significant sites. The documentary’s synopsis highlights the special participation of Pope Leo XIV in the film’s final scenes, reflecting on Peter and the meaning of his tomb beneath the Basilica.

Pratt’s Statement on the Project

Chris Pratt expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate with the Vatican on the project. “The story of St. Peter is foundational to the Christian faith, and I am deeply grateful for the trust and access I was given to bring his legacy to the screen,” he said in a statement.

Release Schedule and Themes

The documentary is set to begin its international theatrical rollout in February 2027 during the opening weeks of Lent, a Christian season of prayer, reflection, and preparation for Easter. With its blend of history, faith, and archaeology, the film promises to offer a unique and insightful look into one of the most important sites in Christian history.
