Vice President JD Vance emphasized the need for Iran to make a long-term, verifiable commitment to not rebuild its nuclear program during a town hall with CBS on Saturday. Speaking about the ongoing situation, Vance acknowledged that while the U.S. has made significant progress in dismantling Iran’s nuclear capabilities, the challenge remains in ensuring lasting compliance.

U.S. Strategy and Verification

Vance stated, ‘I would say, in some ways, we have won decisively, but the Iranians, the enemy gets a vote here, and they have responded in certain ways.’ He added, ‘Now, have we destroyed the Iranian nuclear program? The answer is yes. So, what are we doing now? There are two things that we’re trying to accomplish: Number one, ensure the Iranians make a long-term, but also verifiable commitment that they’re not going to rebuild, right?’ This highlights the U.S. focus on not only dismantling Iran’s nuclear infrastructure but also securing a binding agreement to prevent its reconstitution.

Ensuring Stability and Security

Vance further noted the importance of maintaining global energy stability, stating that the U.S. must also ensure that Iran does not threaten commercial shipping, which could lead to a worldwide energy crisis. ‘What we have to do is simultaneously make sure that we get the final, firm commitment from the Iranians that they’re not going to rebuild their nuclear program, but we also have to ensure that we don’t have a worldwide energy crisis’ due to Iran’s actions.

The remarks reflect a broader strategy to balance immediate security concerns with long-term diplomatic goals. Vance’s comments underscore the complexity of dealing with a nation that has a history of violating international agreements. The U.S. is now focused on ensuring that any future commitments from Iran are both enforceable and verifiable, which is a critical step in maintaining regional and global stability.
