Democrat James Talarico has secured the Texas Senate seat, defeating Republican state Attorney General Ken Paxton. NBC News called the race shortly before 9:00 p.m. local time, projecting Talarico with nearly 60 percent of the vote, compared to Paxton’s 39 percent, based on approximately 64 percent of the ballots counted.
Trump Endorses Paxton Amid Political Shift
Shortly after Talarico’s victory was projected, the Associated Press declared the Texas governor’s race for Democrat Gina Hinojosa, who narrowly defeated incumbent Greg Abbott. President Donald Trump, in a post on X, urged Texans to support Paxton, calling him a “Highly Respected Attorney General of Texas” and a “true MAGA Warrior.” Trump criticized Talarico as a “Radical Left Dumocrat” and promised Paxton would “tirelessly fight” for MAGA priorities such as energy dominance, school choice, border security, and Second Amendment rights.
Record Spending in a High-Profile Race
The Senate race was the most expensive of the 2026 midterm season, with over half a billion dollars spent. Elon Musk contributed more than $150 million to PACs supporting Paxton, but Talarico out-raised him significantly, receiving $145 million in individual donations compared to Paxton’s $22 million.
Political Landscape Shifts in Texas
This victory marks a pivotal moment for Democrats in Texas, where the state has historically leaned Republican. Talarico’s win adds to a broader trend of Democratic gains in traditionally conservative states, reflecting shifting voter priorities and increased political engagement among progressive demographics.
