A 12-year-old girl was killed Saturday night during a youth football game at Leon Day Park in Baltimore when an argument escalated into a gunfire exchange, according to local authorities. The incident occurred around 6:15 p.m., as reported by WBAL-TV.
Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley stated that responding officers found the 12-year-old girl and a woman both suffering from gunshot wounds. He expressed deep concern over the tragedy, noting that the girl was likely watching the football game when she was shot.
“A 12-year-old little girl, who was probably down there watching football, was shot and killed,” Commissioner Worley said. “My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and the community and our city. Our officers are following multiple leads, but we’re urging anyone who may have seen anything to call 911 or Metro Crime Stoppers,” he added.
The game was part of a homecoming event, as highlighted by USA Today. Commissioner Worley confirmed that law enforcement is actively searching for at least two shooters, emphasizing the ongoing investigation into the incident.
The event, which was meant to bring the community together, now stands as a tragic reminder of the dangers that can arise in public spaces. As the investigation continues, authorities are calling for any information that could aid in identifying those responsible.
