AfD Surpasses CDU in Key German States, Signals Political Shift

2 min read

Germany’s Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has made significant gains in recent local elections, surpassing the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in several key states for the first time. According to the latest national survey by Insa polling firm, the AfD’s support has reached a record high of 29.5 percent, a sharp increase from previous elections. This marks a historic shift in the political landscape of Germany, where the AfD, known for its anti-mass migration stance, continues to expand its support base.

Record Lead Over CDU

The AfD’s lead over the CDU/CSU alliance has widened to a record ten-point gap, with the CDU holding steady at 19.5 percent. The party’s success is particularly notable in states that were previously part of East Germany, where the population has historically been more resistant to left-wing ideologies. These regions, once under Soviet control, have become a natural base for the AfD’s nationalist and sovereigntist platform.

For the first time in its history, the AfD has overtaken the CDU in North Rhine-Westphalia, the most populous and economically significant state in West Germany. The Forsa poll reported the AfD at 24 percent, compared to the CDU’s 22 percent, marking an eight-point drop for the CDU since the last election.

Chancellor Faces Growing Discontent

Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s leadership has come under increasing scrutiny, with growing public dissatisfaction. A Forsa poll found that 55 percent of Germans believe Merz should resign, while only 40 percent support his continued tenure. Furthermore, just 11 percent of voters are satisfied with the chancellor’s performance, compared to 87 percent who disapprove.

Merz’s political challenges are compounded by a lack of public confidence in his party’s ability to address Germany’s problems. Only 10 percent of voters believe the Merz party is best equipped to solve national issues, with the AfD leading at 13 percent. A majority of 54 percent have no faith in any political party to turn the country around.
