Bob Dylan made a striking fashion statement during a private meeting with Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican, donning a black hooded sweatshirt and other dark attire. The meeting took place on Wednesday, during a break between tour dates in Italy, and was described by the Vatican as brief. Dylan, known for his eclectic style, chose to wear a black zip-up sweatshirt with the hood up, a black jacket, a black hat, a white shirt, and a loosely knotted tie. He also wore black leather gloves for the occasion.

The pontiff, Pope Leo XIV, wore a traditional cream-colored cassock and mozzetta with a matching zucchetto cap, creating a striking contrast with Dylan’s dark ensemble. The Vatican noted that the meeting was a private one, and Pope Leo gave Dylan a rosary. In return, Dylan gifted the pope with a copy of his autobiography, “Chronicles: Volume One,” according to NPR.

Dylan, whose real name is Robert Zimmerman, was born to a Jewish family but became a born-again Christian in 1979. This transformation influenced his music, including songs like “Gotta Serve Somebody” and “Saved.” In 2022, he told The Wall Street Journal that he considered himself a “religious person,” citing his practice of reading the scriptures, meditating, praying, and believing in damnation, salvation, and predestination.

Pope Leo XIV continues to recover from lung cancer surgery he underwent last month. Diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma, the pope had a nodule removed from his right lung. While the Vatican did not comment on further treatment or the cancer’s spread, Pope Leo was back celebrating mass within a week, appearing healthy.
