Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit organization backed by Mike Bloomberg, has criticized ATF Director Robert Cekada for his decision to end federal registration requirements for suppressors and short-barreled rifles and shotguns. The organization labeled Cekada a ‘gun industry puppet’ in response to the new guidelines, which were announced following a court ruling that deemed certain registration requirements unconstitutional.

ATF Applies Court Ruling to All Law-Abiding Americans

On Friday, Cekada announced that the ATF and DOJ would apply the ruling from the case Silencer Shop Foundation v. ATF to all law-abiding citizens. The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas, presided over by Judge James Wesley Hendrix, ruled that the registration requirements for suppressors and short-barreled rifles and shotguns were unconstitutional and could not be enforced against plaintiffs.

Cekada stated that the ruling would effectively remove the federal NFA (National Firearms Act) registration requirements for these weapons, making them easier to obtain for law-abiding Americans. This decision has sparked significant backlash from gun control advocates, including Everytown, who argue that the NFA was enacted nearly a century ago to prevent criminals from acquiring these weapons.

Everytown Condemns ATF’s Decision

Everytown responded swiftly to Cekada’s announcement, posting on Instagram to condemn the decision. They wrote, ‘The federal agency tasked with enforcing our gun laws is now deciding not to.’ The organization emphasized that the NFA was designed to combat gun violence by restricting access to weapons that can be used in crimes.

Everytown further accused Cekada of being a ‘puppet for the gun industry,’ claiming that his decision puts community safety at risk. The organization has long advocated for stricter gun control measures and has been vocal in its opposition to the removal of registration requirements for suppressors.

Suppressor Sales Continue to Rise

Despite the controversy, suppressor sales have continued to boom. This trend reflects a growing demand for these devices among law-abiding citizens who view them as tools for self-defense and sound suppression. The decision by the ATF has not dampened this trend, as many believe that the removal of registration requirements will make these items more accessible to a wider range of individuals.
