First Lady and Peng Liyuan Tour Smithsonian, Highlighting Art and Youth

First Lady Melania Trump and Madame Peng Liyuan visited the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art in Washington, DC, to explore centuries of artistic achievement and cultural exchange. The visit included a special interaction with students from the Washington, DC area, highlighting the enduring power of art and music.

Exploring the Peacock Room

Upon arrival, the First Lady and Madame Peng were welcomed by museum leadership before beginning their tour. They viewed the Smithsonian’s celebrated Peacock Room, a masterpiece created by American artist James McNeill Whistler in 1876–77. Inspired by Chinese porcelain and Japanese design, the room features shimmering patterns and fanciful peacock depictions, blending painting, architecture, and decorative arts.

The Peacock Room, purchased by collector Charles Lang Freer in 1904, was transported from London to the United States and has been a centerpiece of the museum since 1923. It stands as a remarkable meeting point of American art and Asian artistic traditions, reflecting the cross-cultural inspiration of artists and collectors.

Viewing a Qianlong-Period Vase

The visit also included a viewing of a Qianlong-period Chinese porcelain vase, dating to the 18th century. Produced in Jingdezhen during the Qing dynasty, the vase features elaborate floral decoration in colorful famille rose enamels, gold, and iron red over a pale glaze. It is part of the Freer Gallery of Art’s collection, showcasing the technical and decorative sophistication of imperial Chinese porcelain during the Qianlong era.

Students Perform at the End of the Visit

The visit concluded with a musical performance by the youth choir from Hope Chinese School, who sang “Jasmine Flower” and “Songs & Smiles” for the First Lady and Madame Peng. The young students’ performance offered a joyful and memorable conclusion to the visit, bringing together the beauty of artistic expression, the appreciation of cultural heritage, and the shared experience of young people discovering the enduring power of art and music.
