Two former FBI officials have been charged with lying to Congress about their role in the bureau’s investigation into Hunter Biden, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Nikki Cole Floris, 46, of Alexandria, Virginia, and Bradley Benavides, 56, of Aiken, South Carolina, turned themselves in to federal authorities after being charged with making false statements to lawmakers.

FBI Director Condemns Alleged Weaponization

FBI Director Kash Patel condemned the alleged misconduct, stating that weaponization of the bureau will never be tolerated. He noted that Floris and Benavides were members of the now-defunct Foreign Influence Task Force, which was tasked with combating foreign influence in the 2020 election.

Charges Stem From Ongoing Investigation

The charges were filed as part of an ongoing investigation into the FBI’s Foreign Influence Task Force. Prosecutors allege that both officials lied about their involvement in the Hunter Biden probe, based on documentary evidence, communications, and witness accounts.

Testimony and Allegations

According to the Justice Department, Floris and Benavides testified that the Foreign Influence Task Force was not involved in the FBI’s investigations into Hunter Biden. For example, Floris told the Judiciary Committee that she was involved in no discussions about Hunter Biden while she was at the FITF. Benavides claimed he only learned of the FBI’s possession of Hunter Biden’s laptop from reading a Wikipedia article in 2023.

Legal and Democratic Implications

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro emphasized that lying to Congress undermines the democratic system. She stated that senior FBI agents who believe they are above the law must be held accountable. The case highlights the importance of transparency and integrity within federal agencies.
