Former Miss Israel Melanie Shiraz has extended a personal invitation to New York City’s first lady, Rama Duwaji, following a previous encounter at a Brooklyn cafe that sparked controversy. The invitation, shared via an Instagram video, marks Shiraz’s effort to foster dialogue amid political tensions.
Previous Encounter Sparks Controversy
During their initial meeting in May, Shiraz noted that Duwaji’s demeanor shifted after she revealed her Israeli and Jewish identity. Shiraz expressed disappointment with Duwaji’s online activity, which included liking posts that celebrated the October 7, 2023, terrorist attack on Israel, framing the Hamas assault as a form of ‘resistance.’
Mayor’s Response and Public Criticism
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani defended his wife, stating that she is a private individual and that political questions should be addressed by him, not her. The controversy surrounding Duwaji’s social media posts led to public backlash, with critics accusing her of supporting Hamas.
Shiraz’s Call for Face-to-Face Discussion
Shiraz told the New York Post that if Duwaji accepts the invitation, she would demand an explanation on how Duwaji reconciles her public positions with the testimonies of those who survived Hamas’ attacks. This comes after an earlier attempt by Israeli representatives to engage Mamdani, including an invitation to a screening of a film documenting the October 7 attacks.
Consul General’s Statement and Mamdani’s Response
Israeli Consul General Ofir Akunis called for Mamdani to attend the screening, claiming it would provide clarity on the actions of those he supports. However, Mamdani did not attend and instead issued a statement accusing Israel of committing genocide. The mayor’s office has not yet responded to inquiries about whether Duwaji will accept Shiraz’s invitation.
