Armed Fulani Islamists attacked a market in Mangu Local Government Area, Plateau State, Nigeria, on September 18, 2026, killing eight people and injuring six. The attack occurred as the market was closing around 7:30 p.m., targeting vehicles carrying Christian villagers who had come to sell sugarcane.
Attack Details and Casualties
The gunmen, identified as Fulani Islamists, fired on vehicles leaving the market, killing two women and a young man. The shooting caused a stampede that injured traders and passersby. Initial reports indicated five deaths, but the death toll was later raised to eight. A resident, Paul Musa, noted that three victims from a different section of the market were not counted in the initial figures.
Witness Accounts and Community Impact
Mathias Sokden, Director of Culture at the Mwaghavul Development Association (MDA), confirmed that three victims were buried the previous evening, and four wounded were treated at Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH). Sokden stated the attackers came from nearby communities and had targeted the market, where Christians predominantly sell sugarcane.
According to Sokden, the victims were primarily from the Kogul community in Panyam district, who farm sugarcane in waterlogged land. He noted that most Muslim farmers in the area are Christians, and the attackers specifically targeted the market section where sugarcane is sold, avoiding other sections with non-Christian traders.
Community and Security Response
The MDA issued a statement calling for an investigation into recent killings in the area, citing over 750 deaths since 2023. Local leaders identified the attackers as Fulani terrorists, and photos from the scene showed victims with gunshot wounds to the abdomen, legs, and knees.
Following the attack, authorities imposed a curfew and motorcycle ban in several areas of Plateau State. Traders reported losses and uncertainty about the next market session, as the attack shocked the community and raised concerns about security.
Broader Context of Violence
The attack occurred hours after the MDA called for an investigation into recent killings, highlighting ongoing tensions in the region. Previous attacks in the area have also led to casualties, with security forces increasing patrols and appealing for information from residents.
