Secretary of State Marco Rubio has approved the release of $320 million in military aid to Egypt, bypassing human rights restrictions to reward Cairo for its diplomatic support in the Iran conflict. The funds, part of the U.S.’s annual $1.3 billion military assistance to Egypt, will allow President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to purchase American-made weapons. The State Department argues that the move is essential to U.S. national security, citing Egypt’s role as a regional intermediary in the conflict with Iran.
Concerns Over Recent Military Ties
However, security analysts and regional experts have raised concerns about the decision, especially given that Egypt recently completed joint air force exercises with China, America’s largest adversary. The China-Egypt drills, which took place from August 22 to September 7, marked the first time China deployed its J-16 fighter jets to Africa. This development has raised eyebrows, as it signals growing military cooperation between Egypt and a nation that has long been a strategic rival to the U.S.
Historical Border Issues and Security Risks
Another major concern is the ongoing border smuggling and military buildup near Israel. For years, Egyptian authorities have ignored Hamas’ smuggling tunnels along the Philadelphi Corridor, which facilitated the flow of weapons into Gaza. This supply chain contributed to the devastating attacks on October 7, 2023. Additionally, the Sinai Peninsula has been a hotspot for jihadist activity, with groups like Ansar Bait al-Maqdis, now aligned with ISIS, conducting attacks that have claimed hundreds of lives.
Armed Buildup Despite Economic Struggles
Despite Egypt’s economic challenges, including a 30% spike in fuel prices and a $10 billion loss from the Suez Canal, the Egyptian military has been acquiring advanced weapons systems. Military experts warn that Egypt’s military is evolving into a regional power, with tanks, fighter jets, and attack drones now stationed near Israel’s border. Former IDF Intelligence officer Lt. Col. Eli Dekel has highlighted Egypt’s violations of peace agreements, including the deployment of tanks and the construction of underground bunkers that could house offensive weapons.
Threats and Military Posturing
Cairo’s state media and military officials have openly threatened Israel, releasing videos that target Israeli tanks and boasting about preparing for potential conflict. These actions have raised alarms about Egypt’s growing militarization and its potential to destabilize the region.
