German police conducted a series of raids across four states on Tuesday, targeting members of a far-left extremist group suspected of plotting attacks on right-wing groups and attempting to instigate a violent communist revolution. The operation, led by the Saxony State Criminal Police Office, included searches in Zwickau, Dresden, Leipzig, Saalfeld, Bremen, and Hamburg, as part of a broader law enforcement effort against the ‘Zwickau Collective.’

Group Linked to Marxist-Leninist Ideology

The Saxon Ministry of the Interior identified the group as a Marxist-Leninist organisation affiliated with the ‘Red Youth Germany’ network, which has dozens of local outposts across the country. According to the North Rhine-Westphalia Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the group openly embraces the ideology of communist leaders like Joseph Stalin and Mao Zedong.

The 2025 report on far-left extremism highlighted the group’s goal of establishing a dictatorship of the proletariat, where the Communist Party becomes the central power following a revolution, effectively merging the party and state. The report also noted the group’s online presence, including its activity on platforms like Instagram, where it promotes communist ideals and participates in protests.

Investigations and Arrests Underway

The Dresden Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Police Terrorism and Extremism Prevention Center (PTAZ) confirmed that 12 suspects are currently under investigation. The suspects, aged 18 to 36, are believed to have conspired to form a criminal organisation aimed at attacking political opponents and causing property damage. So far, five arrests have been made, with four based on previous warrants and one following an alleged assault on a police officer during a raid.

MDR reported that the LinX task force, which specializes in left-wing extremism, is leading the investigation into the Zwickau Collective. The group has also been linked to Maja T, a transgender Antifa radical who was jailed in Hungary for a hammer attack. The group’s online posts have shown support for T, further indicating its radical stance.
