On Tuesday’s broadcast of Newsmax TV’s “National Report”, Republican Congressman Tom Barrett of Michigan addressed the ongoing tensions with Iran, emphasizing the need for Gulf state partners to ensure the Strait of Hormuz remains open. Barrett argued that the United States must take a more active role in securing the strategic waterway, which is critical for global oil supplies and regional stability.

Barrett Calls for Congressional Action

Barrett stated, “Congress hasn’t voted to authorize the current conflict in Iran. That’s something that I think is deserved by the American people. It’s certainly what our Constitution requires, and that’s why I voted with the War Powers resolutions to require Congress to take action on that or to begin to close out this conflict.”

He reiterated his belief that the U.S. should not be the sole enforcer of actions against Iran, stating, “I think we’ve got to lean on the Gulf state partners to really enforce the provisions that would open the Straits of Hormuz.” Barrett highlighted the importance of preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, calling it an unacceptable threat to global security.

Focus on Regional Alliances

Barrett’s comments reflect a broader strategy of relying on regional allies to manage security threats in the Persian Gulf. The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway through which a significant portion of the world’s oil passes, has been a focal point of international concern, especially amid rising tensions between Iran and the United States. Barrett’s call for Gulf partners to take more responsibility aligns with recent discussions about collective security measures in the region.

He emphasized that while the U.S. has a constitutional duty to protect its interests, it cannot bear the burden of enforcing policies alone. “We have to move into a position where the Gulf state partners are opening the Strait of Hormuz,” Barrett said, underscoring the need for a unified approach to regional security.

Context of U.S.-Iran Tensions

The comments come amid heightened tensions between the U.S. and Iran, with both sides engaging in a series of confrontations, including missile tests and cyberattacks. Barrett’s remarks highlight the growing importance of international cooperation in managing these threats, as well as the potential consequences of a closed Strait of Hormuz for global energy markets.
