ICE’s New Tactics Boost Deportations, Quiet Media Response
ICE’s strategy shift leads to rising deportation numbers and reduced media attention.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has implemented a new strategy that has significantly increased the number of illegal migrants arrested and detained for deportation, while also reducing media and activist attention, according to recent reports. Starting in June, the number of arrests surged, with nearly 50,000 detainees per month, and August saw even higher numbers. Despite this, the media did not report widespread protests or public outrage, unlike previous years.
Shift in ICE Tactics
The change in tactics has focused on deploying officers to smaller towns, suburban areas, and various locations outside major cities, where protests are less likely. This approach has allowed ICE to operate more discreetly, avoiding the high-profile targets that were previously common in big cities. David Bier, director of immigration studies at the Cato Institute, noted that these new tactics have limited the opportunities for left-wing activists to gain attention.
Arrests Across Diverse Locations
ICE officers have been deployed across a wide range of states, including Oregon, Montana, Hawaii, New Mexico, Vermont, and New Jersey, which had not previously seen large-scale operations. The strategy has led to a record number of deportation flights, with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reporting a significant increase in arrests and removals.
Public Messaging and Deportation Goals
DHS has emphasized that the public gave the Trump administration a mandate to enforce deportations, and the agency is committed to fulfilling that promise. A recent post on X highlighted the record high in deportation flights, reinforcing the administration’s stance on removing illegal aliens. ICE reported 49,000 arrests in June and nearly 51,000 in August, showing a steady increase in the number of detainees.
Cooperative Agreements and Local Law Enforcement
ICE has also increased its cooperation with local law enforcement agencies, which has allowed for more efficient operations without the need for high-profile raids in deep blue cities. This collaborative approach has helped maintain the momentum of deportation efforts while minimizing public backlash.
