A major fire at a Canadian military base in Alberta has resulted in at least seven fatalities and dozens of injuries, according to preliminary reports. The incident occurred late Saturday night at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, one of Canada’s busiest military training sites, as fierce winds spread the flames into surrounding rural areas.

Fire Spreads Rapidly Amid Live-Fire Exercise

Fire crews were called to the scene late into the evening, struggling to contain the blaze that was fueled by strong winds. Canadian TV network Global News reported that the fire was caused by a gas line or gas well being struck during a live-fire training exercise, though the exact cause remains under investigation. The incident has prompted emergency responses and heightened concerns over safety protocols at military facilities.

Emergency Response and Hospital Overload

The Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton declared a code orange, a high-casualty disaster response protocol, as the number of injured patients overwhelmed local resources. Dr. Warren Thirsk, an emergency department physician at the hospital, described the situation as a “one in every 15- to 25-year disaster,” emphasizing the severity of the crisis.

Officials Address the Situation

Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his condolences to those affected, calling the incident a “serious event creating a major fire.” Defense Minister David McGuinty noted that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are investigating the incident, describing it as “very, very active and delicate.” Authorities have not yet identified the cause of the fire, and further updates are expected.

Wainwright and Military Training Facilities

The town of Wainwright, home to around 7,000 residents, is located near the base, which houses the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre and the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre. These facilities are designed to simulate realistic battlefield conditions and provide essential military training. The incident has raised questions about the safety and preparedness of such exercises.
