Man Drives SUV Into Closed Kroger to Use Restroom

A Mississippi man crashed his SUV into a closed Kroger in Rosenberg, Texas, to use the restroom, causing approximately $50,000 in damages. The incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, when the store was closed and employees were stocking shelves. According to Rosenberg police, the driver, James Mansell Lancaster Jr., 60, intentionally drove his vehicle into the store after the doors were locked.

Incident Details and Police Response

Police reported that the SUV caused extensive damage to the pharmacy entrance, with the driver reportedly upset about the locked doors. The incident was captured on security cameras, though Kroger officials declined to release the footage, citing safety concerns for employees and customers.

Lancaster, who was identified by The New York Times, did not flee the scene. He was charged with criminal mischief causing greater than $30,000 in property damage, which is a third-degree felony. As of Monday, he remained in the Fort Bend County Jail.

Community and Safety Concerns

Kroger officials emphasized that the safety of their associates and customers is a core value, and they did not comment further on the incident. Lt. Sebastian Muñoz, a representative of the Rosenberg Police Department, noted that the employees present at the time were in another section of the store and were not harmed.

The police department’s Facebook post humorously advised that while it’s understandable to need to use the restroom, it’s better to find a store that is open for business. The post also highlighted the need for responsible behavior in such situations.
