Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has launched a new military training program in partnership with several universities, aimed at increasing the number of ‘patriotic’ officers. The initiative, called America’s Corps of Cadets, is set to begin on Monday and will collaborate with institutions such as Louisiana State University (LSU), Liberty University, Tuskegee University, Mississippi State University (MSU), and Hillsdale College.
Partnerships and Standards
The program designates each participating university as a ‘Distinguished Military College,’ requiring them to maintain ‘exceptionally high standards of cadet discipline, tactical instruction, and military organization.’ Additionally, these institutions will earn the prestigious ‘Honor School’ status, which grants priority for officer commissioning.
Hegseth’s Vision
In his State of the Force address, Hegseth criticized the current state of higher education, stating that many colleges have become ‘anti-American’ and focused on ‘DEI-worshipping, woke factories.’ He emphasized the need for students who understand ‘western civilization and the pillars of our republic,’ including ‘the faith of Jerusalem, the philosophy of Athens, the power of Rome, and the freedom of Philadelphia, circa 1776.’
Hegseth commended existing military colleges like Texas A&M and the Citadel for their ‘patriotic and selfless service’ and noted that the ‘status quo of our officer pipeline is good,’ with the future looking even better. He believes that by embedding ‘continuous military discipline and leadership development’ into new institutions, the War Department will ensure the Republic is defended by ‘officers of unwavering character, patriotism, and rigor.’
Historical Context
LSU, one of the participating universities, was founded in 1853 as the Louisiana State Seminary of Learning & Military Academy. This historical context underscores the program’s emphasis on military tradition and education.
