Marine Vet Stands Alone, Stops Citibank Shooter

Footage released by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has captured the moment a heroic security officer stopped a mass shooting at a Citibank campus in Florida. The video shows 38-year-old John Fraley, a Marine Corps veteran and Citibank security officer, confronting and fatally shooting 35-year-old Jacob Pearson during an attack on the Tampa-area office.
The Attack Unfolds
Pearson, armed with a rifle, arrived at the Citibank campus after being contacted with a court summons over a $2,500 debt. According to police, Pearson had called in a threat stating he would bring a rifle and bulletproof vest to the bank’s headquarters. Despite efforts to locate him, he arrived at the building, rammed his vehicle into the gate, and fatally shot one employee, 41-year-old Leanne Selman, who had worked at the bank for nine years.
A Heroic Stand
The surveillance footage shows Pearson walking into the building’s cafeteria armed with a rifle before Fraley, who was authorized to carry a firearm on the bank’s campus, stepped out of the men’s restroom and opened fire on the gunman with a handgun. Pearson fell to the ground as he was hit, struck five times, and later died at the hospital from his wounds.
Sheriff Chad Chronister praised Fraley for his actions, noting that he confronted the suspect and saved lives in a moment of crisis. “In a moment when most people would run away from danger, this guard ran toward it and stopped the threat within minutes of the first shots being fired,” Chronister said. “With more than 3,200 people on that campus, there is no doubt that these quick and courageous actions saved lives.”
Aftermath and Community Response
Four other people were taken to the hospital for injuries and were released shortly after. Chronister expressed deep sorrow for Selman’s family, friends, and coworkers, stating, “There is no justification for this cowardly act of senseless violence that has left a family and a community heartbroken.”
