In a recent debate in Grand Rapids, Michigan, U.S. Senate candidate Abdulrahman El-Sayed, a Muslim leftist, expressed his stance on providing defensive weapons to Israel in the event of an attack by Iran or another state actor. When asked whether he would vote to provide defensive weaponry to Israel if attacked, El-Sayed did not directly answer ‘yes’ or ‘no,’ but indicated he would not support such a measure.

Focus on Domestic Priorities

El-Sayed emphasized his commitment to domestic issues, stating that he believes tax dollars should be used to improve schools, healthcare, and childcare within the United States. He argued that these domestic priorities should take precedence over foreign military support.

“I’ve been absolutely clear. I want our tax dollars spent here to provide schools here… I want to make sure we’ve got good schools here and health care here. I want to make sure that we are taking care of people here. That is my priority,” El-Sayed said.

Comment on Israel and Iran

El-Sayed also criticized Israel and Iran, calling both countries “dangerous in their own way.” He suggested that Israel’s actions have led to unnecessary conflicts and questioned whether such actions have made the U.S. safer. He further accused his political opponents of supporting Israel’s war aims without fully considering the consequences.

“You know, you asked a hypothetical question about being attacked by Iran, but let’s be honest about what happened here. Israel has pushed us to go to war in Iran. And of course, my colleague who thinks there’s a war for everything went right along with it. And here we are. Israel had clear war aims. They wanted us to go to war with them, and their war aims were what? The annexation of southern Lebanon? Ask yourself, are we safer because of that war?”

Clarification on Weapons Support

When pressed for a concise answer, El-Sayed reiterated his position, stating that he does not want U.S. tax dollars to be used for purchasing weapons for other countries. “I don’t want our tax dollars buying weapons for other countries,” he said. “I don’t know what’s so hard about that.”

Albin summarized the response as a “no,” confirming El-Sayed’s stance on the issue. This statement aligns with broader criticisms of U.S. foreign policy and highlights the candidate’s focus on domestic issues over international military involvement.
