In a recent U.S. Senate debate in Michigan, Democrat Abdulrahman El-Sayed, a Muslim leftist candidate, criticized both Israel and Iran as ‘dangerous’ in their own ways, challenging the notion of a clear threat to the United States.

El-Sayed Calls Israel and Iran ‘Dangerous’

During the debate in Grand Rapids, El-Sayed was asked to identify which country, Israel or Iran, poses a greater threat to the U.S. He dismissed the question as ‘ridiculous,’ arguing that both nations have ‘proven dangerous in their own way.’

‘Our ostensible ally in Israel has lobbied us to go to war with Iran,’ El-Sayed said. ‘We have watched as Iran has responded by bombing all kinds of countries in the Middle East and then choking off the world’s energy supply. So, this is a situation in which I don’t think we should be a part.’

El-Sayed emphasized his opposition to U.S. military involvement, stating that he prefers to use taxpayer money for domestic priorities like schools, health care, and child care. ‘I don’t want to be pushed into war by Israel, and I don’t want to be in a war with Iran,’ he said.

Rejecting Foreign Military Support

When asked if he would support providing defensive weapons to Israel in the event of an attack by Iran or another state, El-Sayed did not give a direct ‘yes’ or ‘no’ response. Instead, he reiterated his stance on using tax dollars for domestic needs rather than foreign military support.

‘I want our tax dollars spent here to provide schools here … I want to make sure we’ve got good schools here and health care here,’ he said. ‘That is my priority.’

El-Sayed also criticized Israel’s role in pushing the U.S. toward war with Iran, arguing that such actions do not make the country safer. ‘Israel had clear war aims. They wanted us to go to war with them, and their war aims were what? The annexation of southern Lebanon?’ he questioned.

Despite being pressed for a concise answer, El-Sayed maintained his position, stating, ‘I don’t want our tax dollars buying weapons for other countries.’
