Michigan Candidate’s Anti-Police Rants Surface Amid Campaign
Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed’s past anti-cop comments resurface as campaign faces scrutiny.

A newly unearthed audio of Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed has revealed his past anti-police rhetoric, contradicting his current campaign image of working closely with law enforcement. The audio, released during his campaign against Republican Mike Rogers, a former FBI agent, shows El-Sayed criticizing police as a military force and calling for their disarming during the height of the defund-the-police movement in 2020 and 2021.
Contradictory Campaign Messaging
El-Sayed, who now touts police endorsements and claims to work “hand in hand with law enforcement,” has been promoting slick YouTube ads showcasing support from the Wayne County Deputy Sheriff’s Association. However, the audio reveals a starkly different side of the candidate. In a February 2021 interview, El-Sayed admitted to fearing police encounters and described his experience with law enforcement as negative, stating, “In my experience, the police have never been out there to help me.”
In June 2020, El-Sayed suggested American officers should be stripped of firearms like British police, criticizing them as a military force that could “have its way with us.” He also criticized police unions for “sinking their claws into politicians.” These remarks have since been dismissed by El-Sayed’s campaign as “dumb and unnuanced,” and old posts have been deleted.
Family Ties to Extremist Movements
The controversy extends beyond El-Sayed’s campaign rhetoric. Unearthed social media posts from his half-sister, Eman Abdelhadi, a radical University of Chicago professor, reveal her family’s deep ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. Abdelhadi posted in 2012, bragging about their family’s involvement in the extremist movement, writing, “My family has long been MB.”
El-Sayed’s mother, Fatten Elkomy, was associated with the Islamic American Relief Agency, which was shut down by the U.S. Treasury in 2004 for funneling funds to al-Qaeda and Hamas. Court documents link her to the terror group. El-Sayed himself was listed as a “Morsi Supporters in America” who endorsed a 2012 statement supporting the Muslim Brotherhood’s regime in Egypt. His father-in-law also sits on the board of the Islamic Society of North America, which is considered a U.S. front for the Muslim Brotherhood.
