President Donald Trump criticized Somali gang violence after a shooting during a football game in Minnesota left two teenagers injured, sparking a nationwide debate on immigration and public safety. The incident, which occurred on October 2 outside Eden Prairie High School, led to the cancellation of the school’s homecoming dance, as officials deemed it inappropriate to hold the event so soon after a traumatic event.

Shooting Sparks Outcry and Political Response

The shooting, which left two male students with non-life-threatening injuries, has prompted local law enforcement to investigate its connection to Somali gang activity. During a rally in Youngstown, Ohio, Trump condemned the violence, calling it a ‘disaster’ and accusing Somali immigrants of ‘driving up taxes’ and ‘cheating on everything.’

‘This is not what we want in this country. We don’t want this,’ Trump said, adding that he believes the violence is a result of ‘rival Somali gangs.’ The president also criticized Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), a Somali immigrant, for what he claims is her role in the state’s decline. ‘She comes in from a country without laws, without police, without military,’ Trump said, suggesting she is responsible for the violence.

Legal and Immigration Controversies Emerge

Just over a week after the shooting, the suspected gunman, 18-year-old Adam Abdihakeem Adam, was released from custody after posting a $10,000 cash bond. The White House criticized the judge’s decision, calling it a ‘Radical Left’ move. The incident has also led to federal agents searching Omar’s Washington, D.C., home, which the Department of Homeland Security linked to an ongoing investigation into her immigration history.

Omar, who left Somalia as a child in 1995 and became a U.S. citizen in 2000, has faced allegations that she married her brother to commit immigration fraud. The investigation into her marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, whom she divorced in 2017, has drawn attention from the public and political figures alike. Omar called the probe a ‘weaponization’ of federal law enforcement, accusing Trump of targeting her with ‘baseless lies and smear campaigns.’
