A 29-year-old mother from North Miami Beach is facing four felony charges of child neglect after she left her four young children, including a two-month-old infant and a two-year-old toddler, unsupervised in her apartment while she sailed to the Bahamas on a three-night Carnival cruise.
Children Left Unattended
According to police reports, Nathalie Belizaire boarded the Carnival Conquest out of PortMiami on September 25. While she was at sea, first responders broke into her residence and found all four children huddled together in the bathroom, according to NBC 6 South Florida. The other two children are 7 and 9 years old.
Belizaire told her husband, Lether Bazile, that the children would be with their great-grandmother. However, when Bazile arrived at the apartment on Saturday, he heard children’s voices and saw a television on through the blinds, prompting him to call 911. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and North Miami Beach police forced entry and found the children alone.
Judge Reacts with Shock
In bond court, Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy Glazer expressed disbelief at the case. She stated, “You cannot make this up,” and emphasized that the children were left alone without any adult supervision.
Belizaire was arrested upon her return to PortMiami on September 28, as she stepped off the ship. She declined to give a statement and invoked her right to remain silent. She now faces four counts of child neglect without great bodily harm, a third-degree felony in Florida, which could result in up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine per count.
Children Placed in Care
Bond was set at $10,000, and Belizaire was ordered to stay away from the children. She was released from Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center covering her face and refusing questions. The children were placed with the Florida Department of Children and Families.
This case has sparked widespread outrage, with many questioning how a mother could leave her children unattended in such a situation. The incident highlights the severe consequences of neglect and the importance of parental responsibility.
