California Governor Gavin Newsom issued a stern warning on Monday, vowing to pursue felony charges against anyone who interferes with ballot counting in the state ahead of the midterm elections. In an uncharacteristically intense video message released on the eve of the election, Newsom directly criticized President Donald Trump and outlined his administration’s commitment to safeguarding the electoral process.

Threats Against Election Interference

Newsom accused Trump of attempting to invalidate 20,000 California ballots and intimidate election workers. He emphasized that any attempt to meddle with the election would result in legal consequences, stating, “If you interfere with our elections, California will come for you. No presidential pardon will save you.”

Newsom also highlighted the state’s preparedness, noting that 135 lawyers will be on standby to address any challenges to the election. He added that the state had already passed 13 election protection bills and allocated $40 million to counties to ensure faster ballot counting and increased staff.

Supreme Court Blocks Trump’s Ballot Challenge

Earlier Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court denied the Trump administration’s last-minute attempt to force California to segregate 20,000 ballots cast by non-citizens. The court’s unsigned order stated that the application for injunction pending appeal was denied, with no noted dissents.

The Justice Department had argued that enforcing the federal law prohibiting non-citizens from voting was part of the government’s duty to protect the integrity of the election. However, the Supreme Court’s decision to reject the request underscores the ongoing legal and political tensions surrounding election integrity in the lead-up to the midterms.

Newsom’s Election Security Task Force

Newsom also mentioned that his election security task force is monitoring for misinformation and threats at the polls. The governor’s message was framed as a warning to anyone attempting to undermine the election process, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to protecting the democratic process in California.

The release of Newsom’s video message comes as the nation prepares for a pivotal midterm election, with heightened concerns about election security and the role of federal and state authorities in ensuring fair and transparent voting procedures.
