Over 150 Virginia pastors have signed an open letter urging voters to reject two proposed amendments that would enshrine abortion and same-sex marriage into the state constitution. The letter, released ahead of the November 3 election, calls the amendments ‘opposed to human flourishing and contrary to the Word of God.’
Amendments Targeted for Rejection
The letter addresses two ballot questions: Question 1 would enshrine abortion throughout pregnancy as a fundamental right, while Question 2 would redefine marriage as the union of any two adults. The pastors argue that both amendments threaten the sanctity of human life and the traditional definition of marriage.
‘As citizens of Virginia, we are under a moral obligation to vote for the good of our Commonwealth,’ the letter states. ‘Let us seek one another’s true good and not mark our identity with the deprivations that these amendments would bring to the Constitution of Virginia.’
Abortion Amendment: A Threat to Life
The pastors argue that the abortion amendment would bring ‘more destruction of human life in the womb.’ They emphasize that abortion is already legal in Virginia up to 26 weeks and six days, and that the amendment would grant it a ‘fundamental right.’ The letter warns that this would allow for restrictions on access to abortion during the third trimester, except in cases where the patient’s health is at risk or the pregnancy cannot survive.
‘All human life is sacred and created by God in His image,’ the letter continues. ‘We see this in the beginning in Genesis 1:27. Human life is of inestimable worth in all its dimensions, including pre-born babies, the aged, the physically or mentally challenged, and every other stage or condition from conception through natural death.’
Same-Sex Marriage Amendment: Redefining Marriage
The letter also calls for the rejection of the same-sex marriage amendment, arguing that marriage is defined by God as the union of one man and one woman. The pastors emphasize that the amendment would remove the ban on same-sex marriage and require all legally valid marriages to be treated equally under the law.
‘God created the institution of marriage in Eden, and he is the one who joins husband and wife together,’ the letter states. ‘Marriage is created to point us to Christ and the church.’
Call to Vote ‘No’
The pastors urge all Virginia voters to ‘vote no and reject’ both amendments, emphasizing that the truth about life and marriage comes from God. They encourage voters to ‘love with truth’ and to ‘serve the truth’ in order to protect the sanctity of human life and the institution of marriage.
