U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio concluded his four-day European trip with remarks in Lisbon, Portugal, highlighting the nation’s role in fostering U.S. commerce and defense cooperation. During a press statement on Thursday, Rubio discussed the strategic partnership between the U.S. and Portugal, emphasizing the economic and technological ties that extend beyond military collaboration.

Economic and Technological Collaboration

Rubio addressed the press alongside Portugal’s Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel, underscoring Portugal’s significance as a gateway for U.S. technology companies into Europe. He noted that Portugal’s infrastructure, including undersea cables, affordable energy, critical mineral reserves, and hyperscale data centers, positions it as an ideal entry point for American firms.

“Portugal’s undersea cables, affordable energy, critical mineral reserves, and hyperscale data centers make it the ideal gateway for American technology companies to enter Europe,” Rubio stated.

Combating Narcoterrorism

Rubio also highlighted Portugal’s efforts in combating narcoterrorism, citing the seizure of nearly 200 tons of cocaine in the past two years, including 47 tons in 2026 alone. He noted that these efforts are in partnership with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and have included collaboration with multiple countries in the Western Hemisphere to disrupt drug-trafficking networks.

Historical Ties and Future Collaboration

Rubio pointed to the historical relationship between the U.S. and Portugal, referencing the oldest continuously operating American consulate, established in 1795, located in Ponta Delgada on São Miguel Island in the Azores. He concluded his remarks by expressing his anticipation for future centuries of American-Portuguese collaboration to strengthen the transatlantic alliance and foster a more prosperous future for both nations.
