Russian strikes on Ukraine killed at least two people overnight into Sunday, officials reported, hours after Moscow rejected German calls to ease its escalation toward NATO. The attacks come amid an intensifying aerial war between Russia and Ukraine, which shows no sign of slowing.
Russia and Germany Tensions Escalate
Russia’s top diplomat, Sergey Lavrov, dismissed German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul’s attempts to engage in dialogue during the U.N. General Assembly. The meeting, held in New York, was the first between the two since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Lavrov criticized Wadephul for merely reiterating his official position condemning Russia, calling it a lack of meaningful dialogue.
Ukraine Reports New Casualties
In Kyiv, a man was found dead after a Russian drone struck a non-residential building overnight, according to Ukraine’s emergency service. Another drone hit a single-story vehicle repair shop, sparking a fire that firefighters battled into early Sunday. In the southern Odesa region, Russian forces struck multiple times, killing one person and injuring two others, according to local military administration head Oleh Kiper.
Escalating Conflict and Drones
With front-line positions largely unchanged since last year, Moscow has intensified its attacks with cruise and ballistic missiles, glide bombs, and drones. Meanwhile, Kyiv has retaliated by targeting Russian oil refineries and businesses with its long-range drones. The conflict has left both sides suffering heavy losses, with no sign of a ceasefire in sight.
International Response and Condemnation
An overwhelming majority of U.N. member nations have condemned Russia’s invasion, which Moscow refers to as a “special military operation” aimed at securing its security and protecting Russian speakers. Despite global condemnation, Russia continues its military campaign, showing no willingness to de-escalate the conflict.
