San Antonio, Texas — Two distinct protests unfolded outside the Joe Freeman Coliseum on Wednesday as President Donald Trump held a rally in the city. The Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL), known for its strong anti-ICE stance, and the Bexar County Democrats organized separate demonstrations, both aiming to counter the administration’s efforts to boost voter turnout ahead of the upcoming elections.

Protests Align Against Trump

Both groups converged near the coliseum, carrying signs and chanting anti-Trump slogans. The PSL focused on the impact of ICE enforcement on the city’s predominantly Hispanic population, while the Democrats criticized Trump’s performance as the worst in U.S. history. The protests, though separate, appeared to merge at the main entrance of the coliseum, with signs from both groups sharing the same space.

The PSL’s Instagram post emphasized the city’s suffering under Trump’s policies, stating, “San Antonio is a majority Hispanic city, devastated disproportionately by Trump’s campaign of terror through ICE.” Meanwhile, the Bexar County Democrats used a Facebook post to rally support for their protest, asserting, “Let’s let him know that we think he’s been the worst president in US history and should RESIGN!”

Rally and Law Enforcement Presence

As the rally commenced, thousands of attendees filled the venue, with many unable to enter after capacity was reached. A jumbotron allowed those outside to view the event, while vendors sold merchandise featuring Trump’s image. Law enforcement, including the U.S. Secret Service, patrolled the area, closing streets shortly before Trump’s arrival.

Protesters from various groups, including the Brown Berets and PETA, remained outside, keeping their demonstrations separate from the rallygoers. Despite the presence of both protesters and supporters, the crowd appeared largely indifferent to the demonstrations.

Context of Anti-ICE Sentiment

The PSL’s focus on ICE enforcement reflects broader concerns in San Antonio, where the city has seen a significant number of deportations. The group’s efforts align with ongoing debates over immigration policy and its impact on communities. Meanwhile, the Democratic Party’s protest underscores the political tension surrounding Trump’s re-election campaign and the push for Democratic candidates in key races.
