During an appearance on CBS’s Face the Nation on Sunday, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) condemned the rhetoric from Republican lawmakers targeting Michigan’s Democratic Senate candidate, Abdul El-Sayed. Sanders called the comments ‘disgusting’ and ‘racist,’ urging Americans to reject the ‘ugliness’ of such attacks.

Republican Attacks on El-Sayed Draw Strong Criticism

Sanders criticized remarks from several GOP figures, including Senator Ted Cruz, former President Donald Trump, and Bernie Moreno, who have criticized El-Sayed for his views on Israel and his advocacy for progressive policies like Medicare for All. Sanders emphasized that the level of vitriol directed at El-Sayed is not just politically motivated but also racist.

‘What Cruz and Trump and Vance and others are saying is disgusting. It really is,’ Sanders said. ‘And again, I don’t care if you disagree with Abdul— he believes in Medicare for all, he believes in taxing billionaires. Fine, you disagree with him on that, that’s fine. But that level of racism, overt, absolute racism, is frankly disgusting and should appall every decent American.’

El-Sayed’s Campaign Faces Backlash Amid Political Tensions

Sanders also addressed concerns raised by some Americans who believe that criticism of El-Sayed’s stance on Israel amounts to anti-Semitism. As a Jewish senator, Sanders expressed personal outrage at the ideology, citing the historical impact of anti-Semitism, including the Holocaust. He clarified that criticizing a government in Israel, such as the right-wing administration led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, is not anti-Semitic but a legitimate political stance.

‘To be critical of a racist extremist government in Israel, and to say that American taxpayers should not spend a nickel supporting that government is not anti-Semitism, it is attacking a right-wing government,’ Sanders said. ‘And I would say the same about any other government on earth.’

El-Sayed’s Campaign and the Broader Political Landscape

Sanders praised El-Sayed’s campaign, calling it ‘extraordinary’ and expressing confidence in his potential victory in Michigan. The senator highlighted the growing public backlash against the GOP’s aggressive rhetoric, suggesting that voters are increasingly rejecting the divisive and racist language being used in the race.

The comments from Sanders come as the Michigan Senate race intensifies, with Democrats and Republicans clashing over a range of issues, including foreign policy and domestic priorities. The race has become a focal point for broader debates about the role of race, religion, and ideology in American politics.
