Unofficial election results from Guam have shown a Republican victory in the gubernatorial race, with Tony Ada securing the governorship. Located approximately 3,800 to 4,000 miles from Hawaii, Guam conducted its elections on Tuesday, with results emerging before the U.S. territory’s time zone, which is 15 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time.
Ada Wins Governorship with 51.45% of Votes
According to the Guam Election Commission, Republican candidate Tony Ada and his running mate, Edward John (E.J.) Calvo, received 51.45% of the total 30,944 votes counted. This marked a significant shift from the territory’s historically Democratic leanings. Democrat candidate Therese Terlaje and her running mate, Sabina Perez, secured 48.15% of the vote.
Terlaje announced she had already called Ada to concede, as per the Pacific Daily News. Ada is set to assume the role from current governor, Democrat Lou Leon Guerrero.
Trump Celebrates GOP Victory in Guam
President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to congratulate Ada on the Republican victory, highlighting the shift in the traditionally Democratic territory. “Guam, which has always been considered strongly Democrat, just had an early call for a Republican victory in the top spot, Governor — Congratulations to Tony Ada! Also, the Republicans have the Majority in the State Senate,” Trump stated.
Trump also expressed optimism for the rest of the country’s elections, saying, “Wow, hopefully that’s an indication for things to come!” The results also indicated that Democrat Alicia Anne Garrido Limtiaco will serve as Guam’s delegate to the U.S. House.
Historical Shift in a Democratic Territory
Guam’s political landscape has been historically dominated by Democrats, making this Republican win a notable event. The territory’s unicameral legislature has already seen a Republican majority, adding to the significance of Ada’s victory. This shift underscores a growing political realignment in the U.S. territory, which is part of the broader national elections narrative.
As the country prepares for the rest of the election cycle, the outcome in Guam has been seen as a positive sign for the Republican Party, potentially influencing the momentum of upcoming races.
