House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) addressed the significance of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to the United States during an interview on Fox Business Network’s “Mornings.” Johnson highlighted the importance of maintaining diplomatic relations with China, while also stressing the need for vigilance against perceived threats.
Diplomacy and Vigilance
When asked about the outcomes of the visit, Johnson emphasized that the U.S. has an obligation to engage in diplomacy with China, given the two nations’ status as the world’s largest economies and major trading partners. However, he warned against complacency, citing concerns over Chinese intellectual property theft, malign influence, and the country’s formidable military capabilities.
Johnson acknowledged the ongoing trade extension and commitments, such as the soybean purchases, but stressed that the most important takeaway was the necessity of a balanced approach. He pointed out that President Trump’s focus on maintaining U.S. resolve in the face of China’s actions is critical for national security and economic stability.
Taiwan and U.S. Support
When questioned about the lack of mention of Taiwan during the visit and the potential use of arms sales to Taiwan as a negotiating tool, Johnson clarified that the issue is more closely tied to the Iran conflict and Middle Eastern tensions. He noted that President Trump has already approved over $40 billion in arms sales to Taiwan, surpassing the total under President Obama, and reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to supporting Taiwan’s stability and independence.
Johnson emphasized that Taiwan remains a vital partner, friend, and ally, and that U.S. support is crucial for both national security and broader strategic interests. He expressed confidence that the administration would continue to prioritize this relationship in the future.
