Vice President JD Vance defended the administration’s deportation policy after conflicting reports raised questions about the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) guidance. In an exclusive interview with Vince Coglianese of the VINCE podcast and Daily Caller, Vance emphasized that no illegal immigrant should remain in the United States.

The confusion stemmed from a report by the Daily Wire suggesting that DHS had issued guidance instructing immigration officers to halt arrests of noncriminal illegal aliens and focus only on those with criminal records. The department later denied the report, stating that no group was off-limits for deportation. Vance acknowledged the guidance was rolled out but clarified it did not represent the administration’s overall policy.

Priority on Criminals

Vance explained that the guidance was an internal directive to prioritize deportations based on limited resources. He said, “If you have a DHS agent and that guy can deport one person that day, he can go and deport a violent criminal or a person who hasn’t committed a violent crime; of course, we’re going to prioritize the violent criminals.” He stressed that this prioritization was not a reflection of the broader deportation policy.

Challenges and Progress

Vance also highlighted the significant challenges the administration faces in deportations, noting the scale of the issue. He mentioned that over 10 million illegal aliens had entered the U.S. under the Biden administration, with an additional 15 to 20 million already present. He acknowledged the time and resources required to train and recruit personnel for deportations, stating that the administration had already deported over three million individuals in 18 months.

Vance reiterated the administration’s stance, saying, “Nobody who has come into the United States illegally should remain in the United States. That remains our policy.” His comments underscored the administration’s commitment to enforcing immigration laws while navigating the complexities of resource allocation and public perception.
