Riots and looting have spread to Barcelona, Spain, as local youths attempt to mimic the unrest seen in France and other European nations in recent weeks. The disturbances, which took place on Saturday evening, were marked by youth-led chaos, with hundreds of young people descending on the city center to destroy street furniture, clash with police, and loot shops.
Unrest Imitates French Protests
The local Vanguardia newspaper reported that the initial protest, organized on social media under the vague pretense of fighting ‘against the system,’ was not approved by city authorities. Despite the lack of formal organization, the event quickly escalated, with rioters using rocks to damage bus shelters, setting fire to trash cans, and using fireworks to attack police. Some made makeshift barricades using city bicycles, creating a chaotic scene reminiscent of the French protests.
Rioters Seek Fun, Not Cause
Some rioters reportedly expressed a desire for fun and excitement, with one shouting, ‘Let’s all go to Foot Locker!’ suggesting a plan to loot the American sneaker store. However, the store had already been shut down earlier, preventing the looters from entering. According to Vanguardia reporter Toni Ayala, the event was ‘cinematic,’ with a mix of languages and a sense of youthful rebellion against monotony.
Authorities Condemn Violence
The head of the local Catalonia government, Salvador Illa, condemned the violence, stating that ‘there is no cause’ that justifies such actions. ‘Whoever protests exercises a right. Whoever assaults or destroys violates it,’ he said, emphasizing that the perpetrators would face consequences. Catalan police confirmed arrests but have not yet disclosed the number of detainees.
Unrest Spreads Across Europe
The unrest comes amid nationwide demonstrations in France, which have so far resulted in over 1,000 arrests. Violent scenes have also broken out in Brussels, Belgium, and Milan, Italy, as youths continue to imitate the French movement. The situation highlights a growing trend of youth-led, causeless riots across Europe, driven by a desire for chaos and attention.
