Disney President Dana Walden described the future of ABC’s ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ as ‘a very challenging daypart’ during a recent Bloomberg interview. Walden was asked about the show’s future, following its brief suspension last year due to Jimmy Kimmel’s controversial remarks about the assassination of conservative icon Charlie Kirk.

Uncertain Future for Kimmel’s Show

Walden declined to make a public announcement about the show’s future, stating, ‘I’m not going to make that announcement here with you today.’ She emphasized the difficulties of the late-night television slot, noting that while Kimmel’s ratings are up, they are relative to a smaller audience.

Walden also highlighted the financial challenges of maintaining a premium talk show in the digital age, explaining that online presence, while strong, is not a lucrative opportunity compared to on-air advertising revenue. ‘We’re trying to make sense of the business while also honoring a deep partnership,’ she said, expressing her personal admiration for Kimmel.

Contract and Speculation

Kimmel has a one-year contract extension through the 2026-27 season, leaving his longer-term future open. Rumors about the show’s end in 2027 sparked speculation, but ABC denied these claims, calling them ‘purely speculative.’

Earlier this year, ABC imposed budget cuts on Kimmel, including reducing musical performances from one per broadcast to just two per week. These cuts followed his brief suspension after the Charlie Kirk incident, which was later reversed due to public pressure.

Industry Challenges and Media Landscape

Walden’s comments reflect the broader challenges facing late-night television, where declining viewership and shifting advertising revenue models are reshaping the industry. As the media landscape evolves, networks like Disney must balance creative partnerships with financial realities.
