New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has issued a letter to parking lot and garage owners, urging them to deny access to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. The move is part of a broader effort to restrict federal immigration operations within the city, according to reports.
Mamdani, a prominent figure in New York’s socialist and environmental coalition, has joined over 100 Democratic officials in the state to call on property owners to exclude federal agents from their facilities. The letter, which was shared with Gothamist, states, ‘Make it known to ICE that it is not authorized to use your garages and lots.’ The directive follows the shooting of Oscar Belgal, a Dominican national who attempted to run over ICE agents during an arrest attempt.
The letter also includes signatures from New York Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, along with U.S. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and numerous state and local Democratic officials. New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin and most of the City Council also endorsed the request.
In response, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that federal immigration operations will continue regardless of the mayor’s efforts. ‘Mayor Mamdani should be grateful to our brave law enforcement officers for cleaning up the streets of NYC since he won’t,’ the spokesperson said, as reported by The Hill. ‘Luckily, no terminated parking will stop ICE from deporting criminal illegal aliens to make New York safe again.’
This is not the first time Democrats have sought to restrict ICE access to parking facilities. In August, Boston Democrats proposed a similar measure, even though there is no ICE facility in the city.
