Airbnb Bans Host-Mandated Chores Amid Traveler Backlash
Airbnb updates its policy to limit host-imposed cleaning tasks, sparking both praise and criticism from travelers and hosts.

Airbnb has rolled out a new policy aimed at limiting the chores hosts often require guests to complete, a move that has been met with mixed reactions from travelers and hosts alike. The change, effective November 20, restricts hosts from adding additional cleaning tasks after a booking is made, and requires them to disclose standard house rules in a designated section of their listing.
New Policy Limits Host-Imposed Cleaning Tasks
Under the updated policy, hosts may only set “reasonable” house rules, which must be disclosed in a specific section of the listing that includes dropdown options for standard requirements. This means hosts can no longer add chores such as doing the dishes, stripping beds, or taking out the trash after a booking is confirmed. The policy also prohibits hosts from requiring guests to perform tasks that would typically be handled by a professional cleaner.
“When adding a request, remember that most guests want to avoid unexpected chores. Asking them to do things a cleaner should handle can negatively affect their stay and your reviews,” the update states. The company cited feedback from its community, noting that house rules can be confusing, onerous, and hard to manage.
Travelers Welcome the Change, Hosts Express Concern
The update has been met with enthusiasm by travelers who have long criticized the added burden of cleaning tasks alongside cleaning fees. Social media users have praised the move, with some noting the irony that hotels have long avoided such practices.
“Airbnb had to ban hosts from assigning chores. Hotels figured this out around 1850,” one user remarked. Others echoed the sentiment, with some expressing frustration over paying cleaning fees while still being asked to do laundry.
Despite the positive reception, some hosts have already launched a Change.org petition to reverse the policy, arguing that it is unfair and misunderstands the nature of self-catering accommodation. The petition has garnered over 4,500 signatures, with hosts claiming that basic tasks like washing dishes or disposing of waste are reasonable and expected.
Industry Shift Continues as Traveler Experience Takes Center Stage
The new policy reflects a broader industry shift toward improving the traveler experience by reducing unnecessary friction. As more travelers compare Airbnb to traditional hotels, the demand for clear, fair, and transparent expectations has grown. Airbnb’s decision to limit host-mandated chores is a step toward meeting that demand, though it has sparked a debate over the balance between guest convenience and host expectations.
