Los Angeles County has raised its sales tax rate from 9.75% to 10.25%, making it one of the highest in the nation, following the passage of Measure ER by voters in June. The tax increase, which took effect on Thursday, is a general sales tax aimed at bolstering the county’s general fund, which supports healthcare services, including hospitals, clinics, and public health programs.

Tax Increase Aims to Fund Public Health

According to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, the revenue generated by the tax will be used to fund essential healthcare services. The tax hike is set to be in place for five years, with exemptions for groceries, prescription medications, and some medical equipment.

Impact on Residents and Local Economy

Residents across Los Angeles County have expressed concerns over the timing of the tax increase, especially with the region already facing a notoriously high cost of living. One resident told Fox 11, “I’m feeling it across the board, from groceries to everything in between.” Others noted that the area has become less affordable than it was a decade ago.

“No one can really start here anymore,” said another resident. “It’s definitely not affordable anymore, especially if you’re starting out.”

Experts Highlight Economic Struggles

Tonantzin Carmona, director of economic policy at The Century Foundation, pointed out that Californians are already struggling to make ends meet. “Housing in California was already extraordinarily expensive, but now mortgage rates are above 7%,” Carmona said. “You look at things like gas, gasoline prices across the country, the average today is about $4, but in California, the average is above $6 today.”

Other Cities Face Higher Rates

Cities such as Pasadena, Santa Monica, and West Hollywood are expected to see total sales tax rates reach 11% or higher. The tax increase has sparked debates about its long-term impact on residents and the local economy.
