President Donald Trump has accused the Democratic Party of causing inflation, asserting that the current economic challenges are a legacy of the Biden administration. In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed that prices are dropping rapidly under his leadership, emphasizing that Republicans are actively addressing financial issues inherited from Democrat officials.
“Prices are way down from what Biden and the Dumocrats left us. It’s why I won the Election, and now prices are coming down, RAPIDLY,” the president asserted. “It’s the Dumocrats’ fault, not the fault of the Republicans – But we are fixing it!” he added.
Many consumers are particularly concerned about high gas prices, with the national average reaching $4.41 per gallon as of September 2026, according to AAA. This is about $1.25 more than the same period last year. The highest national average was recorded in 2022, at $5.01 per gallon, which was under Biden’s administration.
Diesel prices also reached an all-time high this year, hitting $6.52 per gallon on September 22. Trump has attributed these higher diesel costs to the Russia-Ukraine war. However, conservative commentators and politicians have pointed to long-term domestic energy restrictions, tax policies, and broader monetary inflation as the main causes of high fuel costs.
They argue that federal regulatory bottlenecks, such as delayed permitting, progressive environmental mandates, and pipeline restrictions, have constrained domestic production and refining capacity. This has left the American energy supply vulnerable to foreign volatility rather than being cushioned by domestic abundance.
Conservatives also highlight significant price disparities between states, suggesting that high state fuel taxes and specialized environmental regulations are the primary factors behind regional price spikes, rather than international developments.
