Taylor Swift made history at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, winning the coveted Video of the Year award for her music video ‘The Fate of Ophelia.’ The ceremony, held in Los Angeles, was a star-studded event that saw pop icons dominate the stage, with Madonna leading the night with multiple accolades.
Taylor Swift Honors Dolly Parton
Swift took the opportunity to honor the late Dolly Parton, who passed away last month, by dedicating her award to the country legend. She called Parton ‘the ultimate showgirl’ and expressed gratitude for sharing the planet with such an iconic figure. ‘We were all very lucky to share this planet with Dolly Parton,’ Swift said during her acceptance speech.
In addition to the Video of the Year win, Swift received the first-ever MTV VMA Artist Director Honors, which recognizes groundbreaking artists whose work behind the camera has expanded the possibilities of music video storytelling. She also premiered the world debut of her new single ‘Patient Zero,’ which she directed and stars Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson.
Madonna Dominates the Night
Madonna had a standout evening, winning the Artist of the Year award and taking home Best Collaboration for her duet with Sabrina Carpenter, ‘Bring Your Love.’ The Queen of Pop opened the ceremony with a live performance of the song, marking her first VMAs appearance in 23 years. She also performed the track on a grand piano, followed by a choreographed dance routine.
Other notable winners included LISA for Best Pop, BTS for Song of the Year, and 21-year-old Sienna Spiro for Best New Artist. The ceremony, hosted by Snoop Dogg, also featured a heartfelt tribute to Dolly Parton by Kacey Musgraves, who performed her signature song ‘I Will Always Love You’ just one month after Parton’s passing.
