Tennessee GOP Senator Marsha Blackburn has defended her campaign’s AI-generated video that sparked backlash from critics, including Democrats and liberal groups, ahead of the state’s gubernatorial race. The 12-second clip, posted on October 13, depicted Blackburn alongside other Republican figures on a football field, evoking rapper Kendrick Lamar’s 2025 Super Bowl halftime show performance. The video, which featured Blackburn singing to the background of Lamar’s song “Not Like Us,” was shared by several Republican figures, including Rep. Tim Burchett and Sen. Bill Hagerty.

Blackburn, running for governor, brushed off criticism from Democrats and liberal activists, who accused her campaign of exploiting Black culture for political gain. During a post-vote interview in Brentwood, a Nashville suburb, Blackburn downplayed the controversy, calling the video a “funsies” effort to encourage voter turnout.

“Tomorrow. Ready to roll,” Blackburn wrote on X, as she shared the video. The clip, which used AI to recreate Lamar’s performance, drew sharp criticism from Democratic gubernatorial nominee Jerri Green, who condemned the use of AI in political campaigns. “When I say please stop using AI to support our campaign, this is what I mean,” Green said.

Blackburn, a staunch Trump ally, has long supported AI guardrails. Last month, she faced setbacks in her efforts to pass the bipartisan NO FAKES Act, which would allow people to sue over AI-generated “deepfakes.” In a floor speech, she argued that the bill would establish clear guardrails to protect creators and establish federal intellectual property rights for every American’s voice and likeness.

With Tennessee voters choosing a successor to outgoing Republican Gov. Bill Lee, Blackburn has pledged to work with the Trump administration on immigration, crime, and school choice. She has also vowed to keep Tennessee a “safe haven” for conservatives. Her campaign’s focus remains on the November election, with Blackburn declining to comment on potential successors or appointments.

The Cook Political Report rates the Tennessee governor’s race as Solid Republican, indicating a strong likelihood of a GOP win. If Blackburn wins, her departure from the Senate would create a vacancy requiring an appointment and a special election.
