Minnesota Senate candidate Peggy Flanagan backed funding for ‘Booty Bump’ drug kits as part of homelessness initiative.

Minnesota Democratic Senate candidate Peggy Flanagan, currently the state’s lieutenant governor, has been linked to state funding for a nonprofit distributing drug kits used for rectal drug consumption, according to new reports. Flanagan joined Governor Tim Walz in announcing $100 million in grants in 2024 aimed at supporting Minnesotans facing homelessness. The grants included funding for Southside Harm Reduction Services, a nonprofit that provides harm reduction services to individuals experiencing unsheltered homelessness in Minneapolis and St. Paul.
Drug Kits and Harm Reduction Services
The Washington Free Beacon reported that Southside Harm Reduction Services distributes ‘Booty Bump’ kits containing syringes, sterile water, drug preparation supplies, lubricant, and an informational booklet. ‘Booty bumping’ refers to the method of consuming drugs through the rectum. While the administration highlighted Southside’s outreach and services such as syringe exchange and naloxone distribution, the announcement did not mention the specific drug kits.
Flanagan’s Public Statements
Flanagan defended the funding, stating it would help ensure that everyone has access to the support needed to secure safe, stable housing. She emphasized her efforts in areas like paid family leave and child tax credits, distancing herself from the state’s separate fraud scandals. When asked about her role in the fraud, she said the governor had ultimate responsibility, and she focused on her own legislative achievements.
Republican Opposition
Republican candidate Michele Tafoya criticized Flanagan’s response, accusing her of avoiding accountability. Tafoya pointed out that as second in command, Flanagan should have been involved in the decision-making process but instead shifted responsibility to the governor. Flanagan’s eight-year tenure as lieutenant governor has included significant policy work, but the recent controversy over the drug kits has drawn scrutiny.
