Companies controlled by New York Knicks owner James Dolan have contributed $3 million to a super PAC backing Republican Bruce Blakeman’s campaign against Governor Kathy Hochul. State Board of Elections filings revealed three donations to Strong and Safe New York Inc., each totaling $1 million from MSG Entertainment, MSG Sports, and Sphere Entertainment Group LLC, just hours before Tuesday’s debate between the candidates.

Business Support for Blakeman

Dolan has become a prominent supporter of Blakeman among business leaders, stepping in to back candidates he views as pro-business and fiscally responsible. The New York Post reported that Dolan felt other corporate leaders were not sufficiently engaging in the election cycle. He also criticized the Partnership for New York City for not endorsing Blakeman or advocating for lower taxes and economic growth, despite the organization’s nonpartisan stance.

PAC Campaign Efforts

The PAC has already launched billboards promoting Blakeman along major highways leading out of New York. Chapin Fay, the PAC’s spokesperson, told Spectrum News in September that the group had raised over $5 million from donors concerned about the state’s rising cost of living. The latest contributions came just before the only scheduled debate between Blakeman and Hochul ahead of the November 3 election.

Debate Focus Areas

The debate centered on key issues such as utility bills, crime, and immigration enforcement. Blakeman accused Hochul of contributing to higher costs and public safety challenges, while Hochul defended her record and criticized Blakeman’s ties to former President Donald Trump.

Social Media Reaction

Social media users have been vocal about Dolan’s support for Blakeman, with many expressing both support and skepticism about the role of corporate interests in political races. The financial backing of high-profile figures like Dolan underscores the growing influence of business leaders in shaping political discourse and electoral outcomes in New York.
