Conflicting Statements on Trans Athletes
The video, recorded on Sept. 13, shows Talarico meeting voters at Houston’s Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church. When asked about his support for transgender athletes in women’s sports, Talarico responded, “Always,” and stated his position had not changed. He emphasized that his support for transgender children in the Texas Legislature would carry over to the Senate, claiming his policies are the most inclusive among candidates.
However, days earlier, Talarico had told Fox News he would oppose transgender athletes competing in girls’ sports if it threatened safety or fairness. The footage highlights a discrepancy between his public statements and private assurances to supporters.
Policy Positions and Voting Record
Talarico’s statements align with his voting record. In 2021, he opposed Senate Bill 29, which required public-school athletes to compete according to their biological sex. He also pledged to support a national ban on gender-transition surgeries for minors, despite voting against Senate Bill 14, which restricted such procedures in Texas.
Internal Conflicts and Political Strategy
Undercover footage also captured internal discussions suggesting Talarico’s public shift is a political maneuver. A lesbian minister at his longtime Austin church, Rev. Babs Miller, expressed skepticism about his change in tone, calling it a political stunt. She claimed Talarico was receiving advice from national party consultants to adjust his stance to appeal to Republican voters.
Jennifer Miranda, a manager with Texas Together and the Texas Democratic Party, confirmed that Talarico’s new approach is an effort to broaden his appeal. She noted that his campaign is targeting a wider voter base, including conservative Texans, to increase his chances of winning.
