President Trump claims GOP candidate Michael Whatley will lose to Roy Cooper in North Carolina Senate race.

President Donald Trump has made a clear prediction about the outcome of the North Carolina Senate race, suggesting that his handpicked GOP candidate, Michael Whatley, will lose to former Democratic Governor Roy Cooper. With just 11 days left until Election Day, Trump’s remarks at a rally in Greenville, North Carolina, signaled a growing concern about the GOP’s chances of holding the seat, which is currently held by retiring Senator Thom Tillis.
Trump’s Remarks and Campaign Shifts
At the rally, Trump called Cooper a ‘super-liberal sociopath’ and a ‘disgrace to this state,’ while praising Whatley as a ‘great’ candidate. However, the president’s comments appeared to concede that the race is in doubt, with Cooper leading Whatley by nearly 10 points in the RealClearPolitics average, at 50.6% to 40.7%.
Whatley’s campaign has been notably quiet on television, with his last broadcast ad airing on October 7, according to AdImpact. No additional linear TV reservations were scheduled through Election Day, November 3. While the campaign initially claimed the pause was temporary, the lack of media presence has raised questions about their ability to compete effectively.
Democratic Strategy and Republican Challenges
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has been actively recruiting Cooper, who remains popular in North Carolina due to his two-term governorship. Whatley, on the other hand, entered the race with little name recognition or political infrastructure, making it difficult to challenge Cooper’s established reputation.
Paul Shumaker, a Republican strategist, explained that the main challenge for the GOP was Cooper’s institutional identity, which Whatley’s campaign struggled to match. ‘The price point to get to where Cooper was was such a high bar, and it had to be done early,’ Shumaker said.
Implications for Senate Control
With the Senate currently held by a 53-47 Republican majority, the race is critical for maintaining control. Republicans can afford to lose no more than three seats before losing their majority. The outcome of the North Carolina race could have significant implications for the balance of power in the Senate.
