Staged Home Invasion Allegations
Flynn, 40, was accused of killing Ashley, 37, on February 16, 2026, inside their home in Tipp City, Ohio. Ashley, a schoolteacher and volleyball coach, was fatally shot twice in the head while in bed. Flynn called 911 at about 2:30 a.m., claiming an ‘intruder’ had entered the home and shot his wife.
Prosecution’s Case
Prosecutors argued that the reported home invasion was staged and that Flynn killed his wife to end their marriage and continue a nearly two-year affair with 24-year-old Alleigha Botner, a fellow worship leader at his church. Investigators testified that no evidence of an intruder was found, and prosecutors presented evidence suggesting the crime scene had been manipulated to make the killing appear as a burglary.
Text Messages and AI-Generated Songs
During the trial, jurors heard over 100,000 text messages exchanged between Flynn and Botner, including messages in which Flynn expressed hostility toward Ashley and discussed the possibility of murdering her. Botner also testified about conversations in which Flynn discussed ways Ashley could be killed without him being caught. Prosecutors additionally presented AI-generated songs that Flynn had created for Botner, which sparked audible laughter in the courtroom.
Defense Arguments
Flynn’s defense acknowledged his affair but argued that marital infidelity did not prove he murdered his wife. Defense attorneys emphasized the lack of direct forensic evidence tying Flynn to the shooting, including the fact that investigators never recovered the murder weapon. Testimony showed no blood from his wife was found on Flynn or his clothes, and police never performed gunshot-residue testing on him.
Verdict and Sentencing
Flynn had pleaded not guilty to the charges, and two misdemeanor counts of intimidation of an attorney, victim, or witness were dismissed without prejudice before closing arguments. The jury returned guilty verdicts across the board, including on the aggravated murder charge.
