Ceuta’s El Trampolín beach has become a health hazard due to severe fecal contamination, according to a recent report from local health authorities. The waters, now heavily polluted, pose a serious sanitary risk to both residents and the remaining migrant population in the area.

The Spanish exclave has been under siege by tens of thousands of migrants since late July. Despite repeated efforts to clear the area, thousands of illegal migrants have settled on the beach, transforming the once-pristine shoreline into a makeshift shanty town. The area is now home to makeshift shelters made from reeds, plastic sheeting, cardboard, and sheets, with migrants living in close proximity and using the beach for daily activities.

Fecal Contamination Levels Alarm Health Officials

A new report from Ceuta’s health authorities, obtained by local outlets, reveals that the beach’s waters contain dangerously high levels of fecal bacteria. Microbiological tests conducted between September 23 and 28 found concentrations of Intestinal Enterococci and Escherichia Coli far exceeding Spain’s safety thresholds. Although the beach is not officially designated for swimming, the contamination levels are so severe that frequent or prolonged contact with the water could lead to serious health risks.

Local media noted that the deterioration of water quality occurred rapidly, with tests in August showing “good” water quality, but by early September, the classification had dropped to “enough.” By late September, the contamination levels had reached alarming levels, prompting urgent calls for action from health officials.

Health Authorities Demand Immediate Action

Ceuta’s health authorities have urged immediate measures to address the contamination and mitigate the risks to both residents and migrants. The situation has become one of the most visible consequences of the ongoing migrant crisis, highlighting the challenges in managing the influx of illegal migrants and maintaining public health standards.

The presence of migrants on the beach has also led to increased criminal activity in the area, with the local community describing the zone as having “the highest level of criminal activity in all of Ceuta.” The situation remains unresolved, with authorities struggling to clean the area and remove the encampment.
